CONSULTANT GASTROENTEROLOGIST The Gastroenterology departments in York and Scarborough are going through an exciting period of growth and looking for dynamic individuals to help shape the future of gastroenterology services. The trust is open to discussions with suitable candidates in order to develop flexible job plans that meet individual needs and develop services across both sites to allow your place of residence to remain flexible.
The post holders will join a Gastroenterology team of 10 consultants (seven Consultants based in York and three based in Scarborough). This offers the opportunities of working within a Trust whose catchment population amounts to 800,000 and will facilitate the development of sub specialist interests across both sites. Both units benefit from a full team of junior doctors and have access to a 24/7 endoscopy nurse on-call. The Gastroenterology Department provides all aspects of gastroenterology and specialist hepatology across both site and enjoys excellent surgical and the full range of MDT support. Current sub-specialisms include IBD, capsule endoscopy, advanced endoscopy, nutrition and viral hepatology. In addition to endoscopy facilities, there are excellent radiology facilities on both sites.
York was recently voted the ‘number one place to live in the UK’ (The Times 2018). The gastroenterology team at York currently operates a 2 weeks in 8, dedicated inpatient care rota, with the remaining weeks solely for outpatient elective work. The team consists of 3 specialist registrars, 1 full time staff grade, 1 CMT and 2 FY doctors. The General Medicine commitment is limited to a Wednesday evening (on a 1:6 rotational basis) from 5pm till 10pm for the new admissions on AMU and then then overnight as the non-resident consultant. Weekend cover is on a 1 in 8 basis and is purely for gastroenterology inpatients and providing acute inpatient endoscopy.
Construction of a new 7-room endsocopy unit on the York site is underway which will offer further opportunities for the development of advanced and subspecialist endoscopic modalities, such as EUS. There are also highly supported opportunities for clinical research and to undertake teaching of undergraduate students as part of the Hull and York Medical School.
The gastroenterology team at Scarborough comprises of 3 consultants supported by 2 ST3+, 1 full time staff grade, 1 CMT and 3 FY doctors. The general medicine commitment is 1:16 with split weekends. The gastroenterology on call day is Thursday which is a 1:4. As the on call day is fixed cross site working is possible.
Candidates must have a higher medical qualification (MRCP or equivalent) and be on the GMC Specialist Register for G(I)M and Gastroenterology or be within six months of obtaining the CCT at the time of the interview. Your clinical skills and expertise will be of a high standard covering both Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine. A familiarity with issues of service organisation and development would be particularly advantageous. York Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides acute and community services for approximately 800,000 people living in and around York and Scarborough. It has high quality schools in both the state and independent sectors and there are excellent road and rail links to surrounding towns and cities as well as easy access to the beautiful Yorkshire Moors and Dales and the spectacular beaches of the East Yorkshire Coast. London is accessible by train in under 2 hours and there are regional airports in Leeds and Hull. Scarborough is a vibrant seaside resort on the North East Coast of Yorkshire set in stunning countryside. The local industries include agriculture, fishing and tourism. Scarborough is one of the top ten tourist destinations in England, attracting more than one million visitors during the summer months. Scarborough is easily accessible both by car and public transport routes. What happens after I apply?
Day 1; if shortlisted, we will invite you to an Assessment Centre on 15th January 2019 where we will ask you to participate in 2 activities. The activities may consist of a hand written exercise, or a group activity / single activity where you may need to present to a board panel. All details will be provided on the day and there is no preparation required in advance. The Assessment Centre will be based in York in the afternoon and usually lasts no more than 3 hours. Full details will be provided to you if you are shortlisted to attend.
Day 2; if you are successful at our Assessment Centre, you will be invited to an interview which will be held on 16th January 2019
