York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to invite candidates to apply to work with us as a Consultant Ophthalmologist for one of two available posts.


CATARACT LEAD. An excellent opportunity to lead and develop the cataract service across the trust. A successful candidate would also support the emergency service as a minor component of their job plan

GLAUCOMA Specialist. An excellent opportunity to support the two existing consultants with interest in glaucoma.


Job plans, special interests and hours can be developed to complement departmental and individual requirements. A proposed job plan can be viewed within the application documents.

You will be joining a Trust which is proud to be supporting an ambitious programme of service modernisation and has a reputation for providing high quality services. There is strong academic interest within the department encouraging both research and education.

The recruitment programme for this position will take place over two days as follows (please note that shortlisted candidates will need to be available to attend the Trust on all of the dates listed below): • Day 1- Assessment Centre - all shortlisted candidates (de-selective) • Day 2- Interviews - candidates successful at Assessment Centre. Applicants should be aware that the Assessment Centre is a de-selective process and candidates will be required to pass 2 of the exercises in order to proceed to the formal interview stage.

The successful candidates will work within our Ophthalmic team having the opportunity to develop pathways whilst complementing an existing, well established and expanding eye care for York and the East Coast. The service is consultant led with direct consultant supervision. 

York provides a Consultant second on call service as part of a 1:12 non-residential on call based at York Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. On call services cover York, Harrogate (weekend only), Scarborough and East coast catchment areas.

You will become part of a team of 18 consultants in the York Trust with a further 4 working between Harrogate and York. Please visit the department and meet the staff and see the facilities.

As a Trust we provide acute hospital services for approximately 800,000 people living in and around York, North and North East Yorkshire. The Trust has an annual turnover of over £400 million. We manage ten hospital sites, 1,127 beds (including day case beds) and have a workforce of over 8,000 staff working across our hospitals and in the community. Our main sites are our teaching hospitals in York and Scarborough, which are within the beautiful and historic city, and the spectacular North York Moors and North Yorkshire Coast respectively. We run a fully integrated service across both York and Scarborough with a single Lead Clinician across both sites.

York Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (YTHNFT) is part of the joint undergraduate Hull and York Medical School (HYMS) with partners the University of York, University of Hull and Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust. Students are now well established and regarded and follow a five-year curriculum, which makes strong use of problem based learning techniques. There are HYMS departments on our main acute Hospital sites in York and Scarborough which provide new and improved teaching facilities for undergraduate students. The surrounding area of Scarborough & York is one of the most attractive in England and offers many delightful villages and stunning scenery with excellent schooling at all levels. All posts require a broad experience in Ophthalmology. It is expected that consultants should be willing to work across different sites as the combined service requires and according to their special interests. This advertised post is based in York. Applicants must possess FRCOphth or equivalent and be fully registered with the GMC and hold a licence to practise. Applicants must have entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Ophthalmology via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 18 months of the interview date), CESR or European Community Rights.
