This is an exciting opportunity to lead a vibrant service delivered across our two acute sites at York and Scarborough hospitals. The successful candidate will be expected to work at both sites as and when required. You will be responsible for 48 WTE scientific and support staff and be a key member of our directorate management team.

The department is equipped to a very high standard and has recently completed a refresh of equipment that will place Sysmex XN’s tracked systems in the York and Scarborough laboratories. Other instrumentation includes ACL TOP for coagulation studies and Erytra analysers at both Blood Transfusion sites. Specialist services provided include factor assays, thrombophilia, von Willebrand and haemoglobinopathy screening. Our Immunology department provides a comprehensive service.
The department has full CPA accreditation and is currently undergoing assessment under UKAS ISO 15189.
York Teaching hospital provides services to acute and community hospitals and general practice in a large geographical area of North Yorkshire.
We value our staff and pride ourselves in fully supporting their professional development; for example, we have regular lunchtime meetings on current topics and cases, and we encourage our team to attend training courses and external meetings including the IBMS Congress. In addition, as an IBMS approved Training laboratory, we encourage and support all Band 5 staff to obtain the IBMS Specialist Diploma. We are always keen for Biomedical Scientists to undertake further training and therefore very much support our staff in achieving IBMS higher specialist diplomas and MSc courses.
