The Gastroenterology department in York is going through an exciting period of growth and looking for dynamic individuals to help shape the future of gastroenterology services. The trust is open to discussions with suitable candidates in order to develop flexible job plans that meet individual needs

The post holders will join a Gastroenterology team of 10 consultants (seven Consultants based in York and three based in Scarborough). This offers the opportunities of working within a Trust whose catchment population amounts to 800,000 and will facilitate the development of sub specialist interests across both sites. Both units benefit from a full team of junior doctors and have access to a 24/7 endoscopy nurse on-call. The Gastroenterology Department provides all aspects of gastroenterology and specialist hepatology across both sites and enjoys excellent surgical and the full range of MDT support. Current sub-specialisms include IBD, capsule endoscopy, advanced endoscopy, nutrition and viral hepatology. In addition to endoscopy facilities, there are excellent radiology facilities on both sites.

The gastroenterology team at York currently operates a 2 weeks in 8, dedicated inpatient care rota, with the remaining weeks solely for outpatient elective work. The team consists of 3 specialist registrars, 1 full time staff grade, 1 CMT and 2 FY doctors. The General Medicine commitment is limited to a Wednesday evening (on a 1:6 rotational basis) from 5pm till 10pm for the new admissions on AMU and then then overnight as the non-resident consultant. Weekend cover is on a 1 in 8 basis and is purely for gastroenterology inpatients and providing acute inpatient endoscopy.

Construction of a new 7-room endsocopy unit on the York site is underway which will offer further opportunities for the development of advanced and subspecialist endoscopic modalities, such as EUS. There are also highly supported opportunities for clinical research and to undertake teaching of undergraduate students as part of the Hull and York Medical School.

The gastroenterology team at Scarborough comprises of 3 consultants supported by 2 ST3+, 1 full time staff grade, 1 CMT and 3 FY doctors. The general medicine commitment is 1:16 with split weekends. The gastroenterology on call day is Thursday which is a 1:4. As the on call day is fixed cross site working is possible.

Candidates must have a higher medical qualification (MRCP or equivalent) and be on the GMC Specialist Register for G(I)M and Gastroenterology or be within six months of obtaining the CCT at the time of the interview. Your clinical skills and expertise will be of a high standard covering both Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine. A familiarity with issues of service organisation and development would be particularly advantageous.
