Based in the Historic city of York, the North Yorkshire Breast Screening service and symptomatic services are housed in a purpose built building which integrates both imaging, outpatient services and the multidisciplinary team.
Working in this well-functioning unit is a rewarding experience. We have excellent cross team relationships with Surgery, Pathology, Oncology and breast care nurses. As an associate specialist in breast you will work closely with all members of the MDT and the role includes chairing of the MDM and all aspects of onward referral of screening patients. It is a pivotal part of our breast screening team.
The unit provides the base site for the North Yorkshire breast screening programme which covers the beautiful North Yorkshire region with a 3 year population of around 131,000. It is also the centre for the provision of a comprehensive symptomatic breast service to the population of York, providing one stop and follow up services, as well as some outreach clinics at Scarborough hospital. We are proud of our excellent links with the symptomatic breast services across the region.
Our current team consists of 5 consultant Radiologists, 4 consultant Radiographers, 5 surgeons 4 undertaking oncoplastic surgery, radiographers , breast care nurses, admin team and MDT and has close links to pathology and oncology
The unit is forward thinking and participates in research with several, on-going research projects supported by research nurses. A key element of the associate specialist role is to support excellence by learning and audit
It is a reference site for Hologic imaging equipment and SECTRA PACS systems.
Screening is provided on 4 mobile mammography units which cover over 24 locations around the county and one static unit situated in York with further investigations undertaken at the department in York
The service is delivered across the week in 6 second stage screening clinics with clinical assessment supported by breast care nurses and biopsy support provided by advanced practioners, 5 one stop symptomatic clinics and 5 symptomatic follow up clinics. As an associate specialist there will be opportunity to work alongside your surgical colleagues in the one stop clinics examining and referring for imaging.
