Coming to hospital or being a patient in hospital can be a daunting and lonely experience for many people, which is why our Volunteers play such an important role. Volunteers can offer our patients extra support and companionship during mealtimes as dining companion/volunteer visitor who support patients at mealtimes or being a volunteer in an out-patient setting as patients come for their appointment.

We are particularly looking for volunteers who have time over a weekend to give some time to come in and support patients as a dining companion and also volunteers who have good confidence and communication skills to independently deliver activities on our elderly wards. We are also looking for volunteers (18+) who would like to act in the role of Welcomer in our Emergency Department and can, following training, signpost people to the right area, potentially handle difficult situations with people who attend the Department and generally proactively support people who may need this.

The Trust has a number of volunteering opportunities available including Dining Companion volunteers, Fundraising & Events volunteers, Outpatient volunteer and if you have experience of supporting people with dementia we have Dementia Activity volunteer roles (18+) and Outpatients volunteers.

The specific requirements of each volunteer role varies from ward to ward, department to department, but at the core of this is the need to support patients in practical and/or social ways, allowing staff to spend more time fulfilling their clinical or other duties, safe in the knowledge that patients’ personal needs are being met.

As a volunteer, you can give as little as a few hours for a day or as much as several hours a week. We are particularly looking for volunteers who can commit on a regular basis. We do ask that volunteers are committed to volunteering with us for a minimum of 6 months.

If you would like to join our 300+ Volunteers who fulfil a variety of roles across the Trust please visit our webpage for further information and complete an on-line application form. We will then be in touch with you during October to discuss your application further.

If you do not have access to a computer, please email us at and we will arrange to send you a paper application form.
