York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has an ambitious programme of service modernisation and a reputation for providing high quality services. In line with our outlook, we are now inviting applications for the above post, at York Teaching Hospital, based at Scarborough.

The post holder will be required to participate in a full shift rota to cover General Medicine on call at the equivalent level to a Specialty Registrar ST3+. Applicants should already have worked in Gastroenterology and general medicine, and preferably have at least 6 months NHS experience. Recent attendance on an ALS course is desirable.

As a leading teaching hospital we can offer the very best in training and development. We have strong links with the Hull and York Medical School and a modern Postgraduate centre with medical library and clinic skills labs. We are able to provide teaching opportunities and generic/clinical skills sessions tailored to your individual needs and will support attendance to journal clubs and weekly lectures. Whilst a Trust Grade post is not a formal training post, we aim to provide the same level of support and development as we do to our trainees including regular attendance to outpatients and endoscopy sessions and many of our trust grade doctors go on to successfully join the formal training scheme.

This post has been created to backfill a vacant training post, and therefore wouldn’t form part of the formal training programme, however, good training and teaching facilities are available within the departments and in the Postgraduate Medical Centre based at the Hospital. The need for the successful candidate to attend clinical and generic skills training will be tailored to the individual post holder’s previous level of experience. There will be opportunity to participate in departmental audit and teaching sessions, and the post holder will be supported in all aspects of career development.

When appointed the post holder will be part of a team of 3 Gastroenterologists, Two Specialty Registrar including this post, 2 Core Trainees and 2 or 3 foundation doctors, that work alongside a larger number consultants that contribute to the on-call roster. The post holder will be expected to fully participate in the higher tier rota.

The Gastroenterology Department provides all aspects of gastroenterology and hepatology, except transplantation, and enjoys excellent surgical and MDT support. There is a dedicated Endoscopy Unit and excellent radiology facilities. There are opportunities for research and to undertake teaching of undergraduate students as part of the Hull and York Medical School.
